New Google Site Search Links

Google’s site links have been out for many years now but Google, as always, is improving…well everything! Not familiar with site links? They are the small indented links below a company name that allow visitors to quickly get to top level sections of the site (see image below).  I am sure you have seen them at some point even if you did not know what they are called.

The big improvement is a search box that can actually integrate with your own onsite search results page (see image below).  What makes this great is enabling users to find what they are looking for in fewer steps. It’s important to note that this function requires you to have a site search function. If you don’t have one this might be good motivation to get one. Make sure you don’t miss out on a single way Google asks you to describe your content. It could be the way your next visitor finds you.

Unlike many other Google updates that pull information out of your site into the search results page, this update’s goal is to send them deeper into your site skipping your site’s homepage and even navigation.

Two  important take aways:

1.) Visitors will be able to find what they are looking for faster, so keep this in mind when you look at your own onsite metrics. Time on site, pages per-visit, and even bounce rate could start to look worse then they did before. It will be critical to watch these metrics, but focus mostly on conversion rates of your primary goals. With people landing deeper in the site, they won’t need to look around as much.

2.) If you don’t have a search results page on your site with the Google markup language, visitors will be shown a standard Google search page with Google ads of course…so make sure you have a search results page and it is marked up appropriately!
