In 2000, my brother Eddie Bluff and I (Brian Bluff), two of Site-Seeker's founders, began providing Internet consulting services to industrial businesses.
Today, Site-Seeker's clients span North America and are represented in almost every industry - from domestic pharmaceutical research companies to global publicly held manufacturers.
Through a representative relationship with Thomas Register, now known as Thomas Industrial Network, we began to observe that some clients generated more revenue from their Internet Marketing program than others. In several cases, virtually the same program produced vastly different results.
In an attempt to understand this phenomena we began to study website attributes such as:
- availability of detailed product information
- ease of site navigation
We found that without exception, the websites of companies receiving an unsuccessful return on their Internet marketing investment shared the following characteristics:
- little product information
- poorly designed or insufficient navigation
- hard to find contact information
In contrast, the successful websites provided:
- multiple navigation options
- in-depth and searchable product data (parametric search capabilities, CAD drawings, etc...)
- multiple conversion paths creating more opportunity for new customers
We found that you can send highly qualified traffic to a website all day long. However, if the website is not built to convert users, you are wasting money and missing out on the opportunity. Good content and a sound design make all the difference.
Armed with this information, we began searching for strategic partners to help us solve our clients' problems. After an exhausting search, we had interviewed many companies capable of creating attractive sites. However, these companies lacked many of the key skills we required. Specifically, our partner(s) must possess the following capabilities:
Build user friendly web sites which includes:
- intuitive navigation schemes
- clear conversion paths
- search engine friendly
Drive qualified traffic by:
- using search engine optimization to enable their web sites to rank high in response to most important keywords
- investing in paid advertising programs that are handled using pay per click management
Analyze web site data (web analytics):
- studying the quantity of traffic from each referring source
- studying the quality of visits from each referring source
- identifying and correcting conversion obstacles
- determining ROI (return on investment) on specific marketing programs
After several months and many interviews, we concluded that no single company possessed the capability to effectively design, implement and manage comprehensive Internet marketing programs.
Then one day, while attending an Internet marketing seminar, Eddie leaned over and scratched the following note on the corner of my note pad:
"We don't have any choice. Let's build an Internet marketing company ourselves!"
Several months later, Site-Seeker Inc. was incorporated.
